  • Q:I have an old wood nightstand with the original finish that has a bad odor. I washed it with Murphy's Oil Soap and put it on a porch for a couple of months to air out, but it still smells. Can you help? - B. Sims A:The odor is probably not coming from the finished surface of the stand; it more likely originates in unfinished surfaces such as the inside of drawers, underside of the top, and interior of the sides and bottom. These surfaces are sometimes left unfinished, and the exposed wood can absorb moisture in time and develop a musty, unpleasant odor. In some cases, mold can form and contribute to the odor.

  • Dear Two Sisters: How would you get the smoke smell out of a heavy oak wooden bedroom set? The previous owners smoked and the smell still lingers. Any suggestions? The drawers won't come out so we can't put them out in the sun. We've already tried Murphy's Oil Soap but that didn't help. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. -- Mrs. B from Wooster Dear Mrs. B: Even though your question doesn't directly relate to what we see in our decors, it certainly is a problem that is affecting your home environment.

  • Good morning! I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine, warmth and buzz of the bumbles - they are everywhere this spring. I also hope this lovely weather holds today so you can celebrate Dad. The one who coached all those sports teams, drove everyone around and took you fishing or skiing at some horribly early hour of the morning. The one who was always there to pick up the pieces when things didn't go quite as planned. The man who grounded you and showed you the difference between right and wrong, the camper, the lawn-mower and the lover of books. In keeping with "let's give the guy a break," here's a list of gentle reminders for spring garden chores most of which, if not all, can be accomplished by the ladies of the garden.

  • I attended a lecture by an economist last week and as he spoke, I quickly recognized that I share a bit of common ground with the guy. He came right out of the shoot talking about how he shares his bed with a wife and a handful of dogs, and would've given up a kidney to keep his old Chesapeake Bay Retriever alive. When he started into a story about his 80-year-old mother and her brand-new knee, I thought for a moment that he might be a long-lost brother; however, when he mentioned that he hailed from west Texas, I knew it was just a coincidence. The only member of our clan to stake a claim in that area was a nephew with a thing for horses, and he was back in the Midwest in six months, saddle in hand. Still, as this fellow got down to talking economics, it became evident that we did, in ...

  • The adage assuring you that your home is your castle can be, unfortunately, on target. While few American homes today are damp, dank or dark, they might be as unhealthy for their inhabitants as the musty castles of old. Santa Fe architect Paula Baker-Laporte and her husband, builder Robert Laporte, want to change that.

  • When spring starts springing, we humans start cleaning. Or at least we're supposed to -- that's what history, biology, and society has taught us over the last few thousand years. But if you really want to know why we get a little crazy with the rags and buckets come these first few mildly warmer days, you have to look deep into the encyclopedias. You know, they're there on the shelf with all of the other books collecting dust.
