The US must recognize Hizballah as a political player in Lebanon; however, it would be politically risky to open a high-profile dialogue. If Israel withdraws from Lebanon and Hizballah disarms, the organization might fade in importance, but because of its deep roots in the Shia community, its reputation will not be forgotten. Hizballah has continued to meet the growing needs of its constituents.

In Iraq, the Hajis did not live a high-class lifestyle. [Muhammad Haji] was a barber. But there was more social security there, he says, at least before the war. He is stunned by the indifference with which he was met in the United States. In Turkey, "Everyone helped," he says. In America, "You come to my country as a refugee," he says, speaking in English, wanting to make sure he's understood, and "after one month, I don't help you. After you go to the road, to gas station, you don't understand. ... For me, [when I] have a problem here, you don't look [out] for me. He's different, I'm different." In Muslim countries, he ways, "when I have a problem," people are "brothers.

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Gunmen on Monday assassinated Baghdad's deputy police chief and his son, police said, and al-Qaida in Iraq later claimed responsibility. Elsewhere in the capital, a huge roadside bomb destroyed a U.S. armored vehicle and killed two American soldiers, the military said.
The Bradley Fighting Vehicle is one of the more heavily armored U.S. military vehicles, suggesting that the roadside bomb was more powerful than those typically used in recent months. The Defense Department said last week that insurgents were increasing the size and power of the bombs they plant as they escalate their attacks before the Jan. 30 election.

BEIRUT, Lebanon A Muslim protest over caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad turned into a rampage that injured at least 30 people and reportedly killed one in Beirut on Sunday, as outrage over the drawings spread across continents and widened the rift between Islam and the West.
Thousands of protesters in the Lebanese capital torched the Danish Embassy, clashed with police and stoned a church the most violent reaction yet to 12 cartoons lampooning the prophet that first appeared in a Danish newspaper and were reprinted in other media. About 200 people were detained by police.

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A defiant Saddam Hussein marched into court Tuesday and declared that he and his co-defendants had begun a hunger strike to protest their treatment by those overseeing their trial.
Saddam, dressed in a dark suit and appearing more composed than he had the previous day, went on to insult the presiding judge and smile gleefully at impish exchanges between his half-brother, Barzan Ibrahim, and the prosecutor's three reluctant witnesses, all formerly senior officials under Saddam.
