  • LOS ANGELES, July 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Classification and Rating Administration (CARA) today announced a handful of new tools to inform parents about movie ratings. Among them, a weekly e-mail alert that will make it easy for parents to get ratings on their work and home computers or handheld devices. CARA is calling this new e-mail alert service Red Carpet Ratings. Movie ratings are determined by parents for parents with the goal of providing families with information about movies so they can make decisions about their children's movie going experiences," said MPAA Chairman and CEO Dan Glickman, who oversees CARA. "With today's parents on the go, we want to make it even easier for them to keep up with the latest film ratings. Red Carpet Ratings will go straight to parents ensurin...

  • The Regulatory Flexibility Act requires that agencies publish semiannual regulatory agendas in the Federal Register describing regulatory actions they are developing that may have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities (5 U.S.C. 602). Executive Order 12866 ``Regulatory Planning and Review,'' signed September 30, 1993 (58 FR 51735), and Office of Management and Budget memoranda implementing section 4 of that Order establish minimum standards for agencies' agendas, including specific types of information for each entry. The Unified Agenda of Federal Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions (Unified Agenda) helps agencies fulfill these requirements. All Federal regulatory agencies have chosen to publish their regulatory agendas as part of the Unified Agenda. Edi...

  • By Mal Vincent | The Virginian-Pilot It's almost summertime and the popcorn is waiting at local movie theaters. // From pirates to hangovers, the studios will trot out superheroes and sequels this summer. There's plenty for the eyes, but not so much for the brains. Missing, too, will be most A-list stars. Producers are gambling on special effects rather than big names. Anticipation? We're trying to get excited, but it's not easy. Don't expect Oscar nominees to surface during escapist months. // We rate the degree of anticipation with 5 as can't miss it, down to 1 for movies we'd rather skip. Stay tuned for the real reviews when the movies open. There will be surprises. // (All opening dates are subject to change. Many of the films are not yet rated; ratings given where possible.)

  • We're writing about some of our pet peeves this week. And one of our biggest peeves remains the really nutty movie rating system. Since we wrote about it last winter, it has only gotten worse. This year there have been some truly fabulous (and wonderfully moral) movie releases like "The King's Speech," which have had R ratings, and some really trashy and completely amoral movies have come out with PG-13 ratings.
