Non-metropolitan areas have traditionally been at a disadvantage in terms of economic development. The community characteristics that are conducive to the birth and survival of small businesses are often found lacking in rural areas. Some studies, however, have found the rate of self-employment to be higher in rural than in urban areas. While economic decline has led many workers to migrate to more developed areas, others have chosen to create their own jobs rather than to relocate and give up their way of life. This study seeks to provide further insight into this issue by examining the self-employment rates of movers and non-movers in urban, suburban and rural areas.
