The Metropolitan Police Department is exercising good judgment in utilizing the valuable horse-mounted unit as a law enforcement tool for community policing and proactive patrol along with the effort to quell gang shootings ("Spurring a new strategy," Metropolitan, Thursday). When Congress hastily dismantled the U. S. Capitol Police Horse- Mounted Unit after its short existence of 14 months, it is obvious they were shortsighted in their judgment concerning the benefit of such a unit ("Police official's son attacked on Capitol Hill," Briefly, Metropolitan, Thursday).

Police in Fayette County are on the hunt for as many as five men - - possibly with backaches -- who stole an 8-foot-tall, 800-pound, mounted grizzly bear from the second-floor of a Uniontown bar.
The bear was shot in Russia 10 years ago, mounted and shipped to the Eagle's Nest on Morgantown Street as a gift, said John El- Ayazra, owner of the bar and restaurant.
