Mount Olympus (9,570 feet tall) is the highest point in Greece. Ancient Greeks also believed it to be the place where the deities lived.
Greek mythology (also known as Olympian religion) included a large number of deities, chief among them Zeus (ruler of the visible world) and his brothers, Poseidon (ruler of the waters) and Hades (ruler of the underworld). Along with these three, nine other gods made up the 12 major deities. Those others were Zeus' wife, Hera; his sister, Hestia; and his children, Athena, Ares, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hermes and Hephaestus.
