  • Many devices are configured for harsh weather and temperature conditions like photoelectric dual beam detectors and microwave beam detectors. However, PIR's are detectors which rely on an extremely stable environment and drastic changes in the coverage area's temperature can cause the unit to misinterpret the changes to indicate motion.

  • You may have seen the video making the rounds of the elderly couple trying to figure out how to work the Web camera on their new laptop. As they sat in front of the screen together and fiddled with the device, they were unknowingly recording themselves. A granddaughter posted the recording on YouTube. He makes faces, she tries to stay focused, he belches, scratches his nose and even gets a little frisky with his wife. But all humor aside, Web cameras may provide a way to inexpensively monitor our elderly residents, especially those who live in isolated areas, far from family. At the Maine Seacoast Mission's recent elder care conference, a company described how it is using webcams, set up in the public areas of their clients' homes, to ensure their safety. Cameras aimed low to maintain p...

  • The spores arrived from Kenya on dried, infected leaves ensconced in multiple layers of envelopes. // Working inside a bio-secure greenhouse outfitted with motion detectors and surveillance cameras, government scientists at the Cereal Disease Laboratory in St. Paul, Minn., suspended the fungal spores in a light mineral oil and sprayed them onto dozens of healthy wheat plants each day. After two weeks, the stalks were covered with deadly reddish blisters characteristic of the scourge known as Ug99. Nearly all of the plants were goners.

  • Cameras scan the entrances, recording anyone coming close. Windows and doors bear sensors to detect any opening. Motion detectors record movement inside. It's all part of another day at home.

  • Managers often believe that the absence of new threats justifies the reduction of physical security. Yet security professionals view a lack of incidents as evidence that security has deterred intruders. Many of the lessons of physical security date back to ancient times. Castle builders used moats as a means of creating a space or "set-back" between the enemy and a haven. Meanwhile, in his book Effective Physical Security, author Lawrence Fennelly discusses the concentric circle concept of creating barriers between the object being protected and the various countermeasures that should be deployed. These methodologies are standard practices throughout the security industry and can be enhanced with technology such as night vision sensors, remote-control sensors, motion detectors, heat det...

  • TIJUANA, Mexico Rising from the Pacific surf and zig-zagging along the border for 14 miles, Tijuana's border fence has done little but push illegal migrants into the Arizona desert and feed the smuggling industry since it went up in 1994. Today, as the U.S. prepares to build a high-tech barrier with 700 miles of extra fencing, motion detectors and remote-controlled devices, smugglers are already figuring out how to beat the new security.

  • [Jim Aldrich] likes guns. He has them stashed throughout his little house along with thousands of rounds of ammunition. Some folks seek comfort in Jesus, some take Xanax; Jim shoots guns. Though I grew up in rural Colorado surrounded by pickups adorned with rifle racks, I don't share Jim's affection for firearms. I've never fired a gun, and just the thought of them makes my chest tighten. When we last visited Jim a year ago, the women woke up early one day and headed to town. That left Jim, his grandson, Jimmy, and me to do manly things. In the old truck, we headed across the desert to a dry lakebed, and sped through opaque dust clouds. That was fun. But back at Jim's house, when Jimmy asked to shoot "the big gun," the testosterone drained from my system. While Jimmy, a scrawny 13-year-...

  • LOVELAND, Ohio - Grocery shoppers at the new Kroger store in this eastern Cincinnati suburb are bathed in sunlight from 75 skylights in rows overlooking the aisles. It's the most noticeable among many features aimed at reducing energy use by the nation's largest traditional grocery store chain. The store also has compact fluorescent lights that require less electricity and last 10 times longer than traditional bulbs. Motion detectors help shut off lights when areas are vacated. The store recycles exhaust to heat water, uses more-efficient plastic fans instead of metal ones, and has concrete floors that can be cleaned with water instead of chemicals used for tile.

  • The Tri-County Waste Reduction Awards Program is a regional program that recognizes local businesses and other groups for their outstanding efforts to reduce waste, recycle and conserve natural resources. The Draft House has also installed motion detectors to turn off lights, replaced chlorine bleach with cleaners that avoid harsh chemicals and stocks recycled paper towels.
