The rally was part of national "Day Without a Gay," in which people were asked to take a day off work to protest the measure that banned same-sex marriage in California with its passage on Nov. 4.

  • The protest came at the end of a threeday Bash Back.» gathering in Lansing, Mich. Bash Back! said in a statement that some of its members had attended Mount Hope as children, and the group wanted to "confront their demons" and "send a message of acceptance" to any queer youth in the 700-person congregation. Mount Hope was targeted, the group explained, for its "repulsive projects including organized ex-gay* conferences and so-called 'hell houses,' which depict queers, trannies and womyn who seek abortions in hell. Court papers paint Bash Back! as an extremist group. The complaint cites text and images from the Lansing chapter's website that express support for violence, as well as a post on the national Bash Back! site about vandalism of a Mormon church in Olympia, Wash. The group's Ol...

  • Despite its assurances that the Deseret News will continue to be an unbiased news source, the protest on Thursday night at Temple Square showed where the News' true allegiances are. Having attended the rally myself, I saw the true meaning of the protest: To raise awareness about gay Mormon youth committing suicide, which is a large problem in Utah. However, the story by Scott Taylor did not mention this even once. The story quotes the LDS Church, yet could not find room to print the reason for the protest. Why is that?

  • Pastor Terry Jones decided that his church will not burn the Quran in protest of the Muslim involvement in terrorism against the United States. This is a good thing. Desecrating religious icons that a people hold sacred is not something we as Americans should do. Oh, we Americans have no problem desecrating sacred things -- it happens all the time. It just isn't something we should do. However, the reason that the Quran burning was cancelled is not right. There is only one reason it should not take place -- because it is wrong. Yet the arguments against it have been because of threats of violence, increased recruiting by al-Qaida, and setbacks in diplomatic relationships with Muslim nations. Free speech should never be silenced by threats of violence or because other nations don't want ...
