A Redlands-based nonprofit is giving old computers new life to benefit local children. Computers4Kids Inc., founded more than two years ago by Redlands resident and elementary schoolteacher Marie DeBello, gives refurbished computers and educational software to children who need academic help. The all-volunteer group has given away more than 50 computers since it started, DeBello said.

Google Inc.'s software platform is set to become more popular than Apple Inc.'s in monthly applications downloaded onto smartphones and tablet computers as use of the company's mobile devices grows. Apple's operating system kept the lead last month with 1.45 billion downloads led by "Angry Birds" to Google's Android system with 640 million, according to Xyologic data. Android's app downloads are seeing "hyper-exponential" growth that may push it to catch up to Apple in June 2012, said Matthaus Krzykowski, cofounder of download tracker Xyologic.
