Germantown - Officials here are considering a rare move that could take millions of property tax dollars from the Milwaukee Area Technical College District and move them to the Fond du Lac-based Moraine Park Technical College District. The move, if it were made today, would result in a reduction of about 23% in the technical college portion of Germantown property tax bills.
Germantown - A proposal to remove Germantown from the Milwaukee Area Technical College District is a step into largely uncharted territory, but it is attracting interest from other communities that want to cut property taxes. Meanwhile, MATC is waiting to see whether it could lose millions of dollars to the Moraine Park Technical College District, should Germantown succeed in moving to the lower taxing district.
Businesses and organizations around the county that support CCDI include ADVOCAP, the Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce, Fond du Lac Area United Way, Fond du Lac County, Fond du Lac County Economic Development Corp., Fond du Lac Public Library, Fond du Lac YMCA, Fond du Lac School District, Marian University, Moraine Park Technical College, Ripon College, Ripon Community Development Corporation, United for Diversity, UW-Fond du Lac, and UW-Fond du Lac Extension. According to Hicks-Sorensen, examples of business that provided a statement of support are Society Insurance, the President of Lion's Laundry in Ripon, Mercury Marine and Aurora Health Care.
With $5.7 million per year for Milwaukee Area Technical College at stake, the school and its supporters will make a case today for why students and regional cooperation would be harmed if the Germantown School District is allowed to secede from MATC. Germantown-area residents, aside from seeking a property tax reduction that would come with secession, are expected to argue that switching to the Moraine Park Technical College District would better enable Germantown to collaborate with, and have a greater say in running, a technical college system.
The property tax rate that Germantown residents pay to the Milwaukee Area Technical College is $1.77 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The property tax rate for the Moraine Park Technical College District, which the Germantown School Board is asking to join, is $1.34 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. On a $300,000 home, that's an annual savings of $129 -- perhaps a little more if the Moraine Park rate adjusts to the addition of more taxpayers. While that may be enticing for some, we still think it's not worth the cost. What cost? By seceding from MATC, which Germantown petitioned to join in 1971, Germantown would deprive that district of $5.5 million in annual revenue. That would hurt the district's ability to provide the quality programs it offers now to a host of students, including t...
Germantown School District Superintendent Victor Rossetti on Monday became the sole applicant for an opening on the Milwaukee Area Technical College board, but another Germantown official vowed to continue pressing for Germantown to leave MATC for another technical college district. Germantown Village Board members have talked about leaving the MATC district for the less-expensive Moraine Park Technical College district, expressing frustration with the pace of property tax increases in the Milwaukee district and the lack of Ozaukee and Washington county representation on its board of directors.
Germantown - The possibility of leaving the Milwaukee Area Technical College District must be thoroughly researched before any decision is made whether to petition the state for such a move, Germantown School Board members said Tuesday. The School Board has been asked to join the Village Board in requesting to be part of the lower-taxing Moraine Park Technical College District and leave MATC. The state Technical College Board would consider the request. So far, the Village Board has taken no formal action.
Milwaukee Area Technical College has filed its formal opposition to Germantown's attempt to secede from MATC and join the Moraine Park Technical College District. MATC argues that more Germantown students attend MATC than Moraine Park and that most take courses "that have no exact program match" at Moraine Park. MATC also cites an expected loss of $5.7 million per year in property tax revenue and said the secession would harm regional cooperation in metropolitan Milwaukee.

Confronted with one suburb's talk of leaving the Milwaukee Area Technical College district, the school's board on Friday seemed of two minds. One said reach out to and demonstrate MATC's value to the region. The other characterized the renegade moves as mere politics. Village of Germantown Administrator David Schornack on Wednesday asked the Germantown School District to jointly file a petition to leave the Milwaukee district for Moraine Park, a less expensive technical college district in Washington County.
