PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Monopoly, the iconic game of capitalism, has been drawn into the dispute over Jerusalem. Hasbro Inc. issued an apology Thursday after an employee, responding to complaints from pro-Palestinian groups, eliminated the word "Israel" after the city in an online contest to select names for a new Monopoly board game: Monopoly Here and Now: The World Edition.
MONOPOLY GAME UPDATES VIA VISA Monopoly bankers won't have all that cash to throw around anymore. Wired.com reported that the new version of Parker Brothers' classic board game is dispensing with colorful currency and will instead employ Visa mock debit cards. The card is inserted into an electronic device in which the banker records the players' earnings and payments. Parker partnered with Visa for the updated game; Visa made the card and banking machine. The new version also allows you to own popular destinations from across the U.S., which you can buy and sell at values reflecting current market prices, according to the official Monopoly Web site. The Monopoly Here and Now Electronic Banking Edition reportedly will retail for about $46. A release date has not been announced.
NO RESPECT. AGAIN As a Cleveland native, I was initially delighted to learn that Jacobs Field, home of the baseball Indians, has been one of just four sport sites selected for inclusion as properties in Monopoly: Here and Now, an updated version of everybody's favorite board game. (Boston's Fenway Park, Chicago's Wrigley Field and Texas Stadium are the others). As with all things in Cleveland sports, though, disappointment lurked right around the corner. "The Jake" is one of the low-rent properties. But at least I know now how natives of Baltic and Mediterranean avenues feel.
