  • WASHINGTON - Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner affirmed Wednesday the administration's intent to soon end the $700 billion financial bailout program. Geithner did not provide details, but said the government is close to the point at which "we can wind down this program" and end it.

  • Incomes will always fall when the total money supply in the country falls. That was exactly what happened in 2008 when the Federal Reserve shrank the money supply at a rate of 6 percent annually. The results of lost income continue, as does the shrinkage in the availability of business bank loans. There have been major winners, too: the Fed insiders who knew in advance of its actions. They made out like bandits in all the interest-rate-sensitive securities and bought up businesses cheaply that were hurt by the decreasing number of business bank loans. The Fed likely intentionally shrank the money supply to help its friends. It's now time to shrink the power of the Fed.

  • Then-candidate Barack Obama bemoaned those simple-minded rural folk in Pennsylvania who "cling to guns and religion" in response to economic despair. Since Obama's election, however, Americans have clung to guns like never before. With hyper-inflation looming, a catastrophe initiated by Bush and continued by Obama, guns are thriving and religion may follow suit. Ari Armstrong, a leader in Colorado's libertarian community and publisher of FreeColorado.com, recommends an alarming visual exhibit of the nation's growing money supply. Don't look at this if you don't have a strong stomach. It's a graph showing the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis' adjusted monetary base, the combined index of Federal Reserve activity pertaining to the money supply (http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series...

  • Most economists, including yours truly, have been saying that the huge budget deficits the country is running will result in inflation. So, where's the inflation? Inflation normally lags changes in the growth of the money supply by one to two years. The big monetary expansion took place in the last half of 2008. So if the economy follows past trends, one would expect to see growing inflation by the latter part of this year. There are several reasons why inflation does not occur simultaneously with a sudden growth in the money supply. (Remember, inflation is caused by the money supply growing faster than the supply of goods and services.) The Fed greatly expands the money supply when it sees the economy is entering a recession in order to temporarily reduce interest rates and increase th...

  • The global financial crisis has not hit Norway as hard as many other countries, but Norwegian markets and financial institutions have certainly felt the impact. Prices on the Oslo Stock Exchange had by end-November decreased by more than half since their peak in May 2008. Risk premiums in money and bond market were extraordinarily high for Norwegian banks. Norges Bank's surveys of banks' liquidity position have revealed a gradual deterioration in the supply of funding since June 2008. Also, growth in lending to the retail market is now slowing. Norges Bank's Survey of Bank Lending found that a considerably larger proportion of banks tightened their credit standards for households in 2008 Q3 than in Q2. Norwegian banks' earnings have been in decline over the past year. The turmoil in fin...

  • It wasn't enough to preside over the first-ever downgrade of America's credit rating. Now the Obama administration is downgrading America's energy supply as well. "We'll invest $15 billion a year over the next decade in renewable energy, creating five million new green jobs that pay well, can't be outsourced and help end our dependence on foreign oil," candidate Barack Obama promised in the fall of 2008. But why stop there? Why not claim that you can heal the planet - whatever that means - and control the ocean levels too? Oh yeah, he did. Let's start at the beginning. America's energy policy should center around the obvious: supplying Americans with affordable and reliable energy. File that under D for "duh." Instead, it has been hijacked by those with ulterior motives ranging from sla...
