The American people are not happy, and with an election-year looming, President Obama and members of Congress are trying really hard to figure out how to make them happy. Right now, working Americans are enjoying a 2 percentage-point break on their Social Security taxes. That keeps just a smidge more money in their pockets each week. Somalia's parliament Sunday approved a former Grand Island resident as the country's prime minister, but some people are already questioning whether Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed will be able to make a difference in the war-ravaged country under attack from al-Qaida-linked militants. The Somali native, who resettled in Western New York in 1990, was named prime minister of his troubled homeland Oct. 14 by the Somali president.

• Lewiston Youth Advisory Council Members Appointed for 2011-12

LEWISTON -- The 2011-12 membership of the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council have begun their year of service and were recognized at the July 19 City Council meeting. Twelve youths were appointed this year, with eight returning members and four new members. The youth will serve through July 2012. The membership consists of Nairus Abdullahi, Jake Bergeron, Courtney Costello, Stephanie Costello, Brendan Landry, Sabin Lavorgna, Kenzi Masselli, Nadifa Mohamed, Shuaib Naji, Amanda Swart, Marcus T.
