Caring and supportive student-teacher relationships can contribute to positive outcomes for students at risk for academic failure, social isolation, and school dropout. In fact, young adolescents want rewarding relationships at school that are characterized by compassion, respect, personalization, fellowship, and friendship (Doda & Knowles, 2008). The current study compared the benefits and challenges of implementing dialogue journals between behaviorally and academically challenged middle school students and their teachers for the purpose of improving student-teacher relationships and, subsequently, reducing students' problem behaviors. Researchers observed and recorded the behavior of two students to determine whether their disruptive behaviors (e.g., arguing and refusing to follo...

This paper presents the results of a web-based survey of economic educators who were asked about their knowledge and experience with human subjects research and the mandated federal protocols that govern such research at most American universities. They are skeptical of the net benefits of the mandated protocols because of the perceived discouraging burdens of the paperwork that rarely result in significant modifications of their research projects. The authors conclude that recent calls for modifications to the federal regulations for classroom-based research project...

Special and general educators rely on the school library for many reasons, such as the wealth of resources that are used to motivate students and individualize instruction and the fact that many students with disabilities enjoy spending time there (Smith-Canter, Voytecki, Zambone, and Jones 2009). In the June 2009 issue of School Library Media Activities Monthly, Helen R. Adams discussed the legal and ethical mandates for school librarians to serve students with special needs (54). While school librarians may not always have a great deal of training and support to accommodate students with disabilities, they have historically welcomed this group of students. This article is designed to provide school librarians with an overview of the types of challenges faced by students with special n...
