In 1934, [Mildred Johnson Edwards] founded The Modern School at Harlem St. Philips Episcopal Church in order to satisfy a studentteacher training requirement. New York private schools excluded Blacks from student teaching at the time. Staffed by New York State-certified teachers, The Modern School (grades pre-K to 6) offered an academically rigorous curriculum coupled with a strong Black history component. Open until 2003, The Modern School, a private, secular place of learning, served more than three generations of African Americans, many of whom pursued careers in the public and private sectors as doctors, judges, university professors, social scientists, entrepreneurs and educators.
