WASHINGTON - Mid-Atlantic residents were buried Saturday by a blizzard the president jokingly called "Snowmageddon," and those brave enough tried to clear a path through the wet, heavy mounds of thigh-high snow. The snow was falling too quickly in the nation's capital for crews to keep up, and was easily one of the worst snowstorms for D.C. in modern history. Officials urged residents to stay home and out of the way so that roads might be cleared in time for work Monday. The usually congested roads were mostly barren, and Washington's familiar sites and monuments were covered with nearly 2 feet of snow.

A modern day history maker, Ms. [Miriam Muley] is the former executive director of General Motors' Center of Expertise for Diversity Growth Markets and the author of "The 85% Niche: The Power of Women of All Colors." She graciously shares her expertise and insights with Chronicle readers, in celebration of Women's History Month. My goal with my company, The 85% Niche, is to dispel the perception that all women are uniformly the same. And my book, "The 85% Niche: The Power of Women of All Colors," speaks directly to the business potential offered by the 54 million women of color in this country who generate $1 trillion as consumers and an additional $230 billion as entrepreneurs. I am urging companies to continue to embrace the women's market for the power that it offers, but to go deepe...
The number of illegal immigrants in the United States dropped by nearly 1 million from 2007 to 2009 as the Bush administration ramped up enforcement efforts just as the economy took a dive, according to new figures the Homeland Security Department released Tuesday. The drop - which analysts said is unprecedented in modern history - indicates that more illegal immigrants left to go back home, and that fewer illegal immigrants actually tried to cross the border in 2007 and 2008 - data that will play a major role when Congress takes up the immigration issue later this year.
This Article examines the tax treatment of Islamic mortgage alternatives and considers the cultural and constitutional implications of the tax treatment of mortgage debt. Islamic law cannot be separated from the religion of Islam, and one of the primary tenets of Islamic law is the prohibition of riba, which is defined by some Islamic jurists as the payment of interest on any loan. Financing institutions, working with Muslim religious leaders, have developed a number of financing instruments that do not violate the prohibition against riba, thus facilitating home ownership for those Muslims who do not feel comfortable with a traditional mortgage. Should payments under such instruments qualify for the home mortgage interest deduction? What are the potential consequences of either permitt...

In 1915, the year the home at 3409 Newark St. NW was built, Washingtonians used the trolley for travel. One popular destination was Glen Echo Amusement Park, where local families had been enjoying amusement-park rides and the Spanish Ballroom for more than a quarter of a century. The trolleys and Glen Echo's heyday are a memory, but the Victorian Newark Street home retains its charm. Now on the market for $1,995,000, this Cleveland Park gem has been updated with modern amenities that complement the home's history.
Around the European Union, the implication by large sections of society is that there is something intrinsically different about Islam that makes it difficult to integrate Muslims into European societies. Some of these sections of society are non-Muslim, and are reluctant to allow such integration to take place; others are Muslim. These sentiments raise a number of issues relating to plural identities and their compatibility with modern day Europe and Islam, with such issues finding variable expressions in member-states. The British example represents an illustrative case study, having a long history of interaction with Muslims and being the home of a large Muslim population. History bears witness that in terms of religious diversity, the U.K. was never a monolithic society based on a m...
