  • Wanting to teach the city's high schoolers about the justice system and the consequences of sudden violent actions, Judge Lubbie Harper Jr. returned to his alma mater, Wilbur Cross High School, Thursday for a state Appellate Court session in the school's auditorium. Nearly 200 students from high schools throughout New Haven watched as lawyers argued two cases, one of them a murder conviction, before Harper and two other appellate judges, Chase Rogers and Douglas Lavine. They will issue their rulings at a later date. This was no "mock trial." They were actual cases, which usually would have been argued in the Hartford courthouse. However, Harper and other legal officials are carrying out a program to bring these sessions into the schools.
