Gov. Jay Nixon appointed James Fleischaker, of Joplin, to the Missouri Southern State University Board of Governors, which oversees the implementation of academic programs of higher learning. Fleischaker is a former circuit judge for Jasper County and has served as a Joplin Special Road District commissioner. Nixon appointed him for a term ending Aug. 30, 2017.
Daniel Burke, an Armstrong Teasdale lawyer, has become a member of the Clayton Century Foundation Major Gifts Committee. The CCF is a non-profit organization serving as a private partner to the City of Clayton in support of the restoration and enhancement of Clayton's cultural, recreational and environmental assets. Burke is a member of the firm's real estate, public finance and future energy practice groups.

It isn't often that a high school football team can find a coach with college experience, but that's what Widefield found when it hired Bill Cooke as football coach.
Cooke, who is the academic coordinator at Crowder College in Neosho, Mo., coached at Fort Lewis College for seven seasons, two as an assistant and five as coach. He then coached at Missouri Southern State University for 16 years, including four as a head coach.

Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Vernon County's prosecutor to the Board of Governors of the Missouri Southern State University.
Nixon's office announced that the governor appointed Lynn W. Ewing III. He replaces David Ansley, who resigned from the Joplin- based institution's board after making a derogatory slur to describe a former logo, according to a report in the Springfield News- Leader.

Kristen Frost won her third NCAA title in as many tries and set her second national record in the process by winning the 500-yard freestyle Friday at the NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships at the Mizzou Aquatics Center at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo.
Swimming for Southern Connecticut State, Frost won the event in 4 minutes, 45.69 seconds to crack the longest standing record on the books. The old record was set 21 years ago.

* Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Vernon County's prosecutor to the Board of Governors of Missouri Southern State University. Lynn W. Ewing III replaces David Ansley, who resigned from the Joplin-based institution's board after reportedly using a homosexual slur in referring to a drawing of the school mascot. Ewing has been Vernon County's prosecutor since 1999, according to a press release from Nixon's office. Before that, Ewing served as mayor of Nevada and on the Nevada City Council. His nomination must be approved by the Missouri Senate.

Ryan Morris, a junior defender and three-year starter at Missouri Southern State University, was named to the Southwest Soccer Conference's 2006 All-Academic Team after earning a 3.7 GPA. The biology major played on Washburn Rural's undefeated state championship team in 2002 and was a 6A All-State selection in 2003.
