Friendly event: The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) and its wildlife management areas have scheduled public meetings in the north and southwest portions of the state to showcase regional WMA harvest data, wildlife habitat and infrastructure improvements and regulations changes for the 2011-12 hunting season.

Focusing on fishing: The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks has conducted electro-fishing the last several weeks at Sardis Lake and the result has shown a good crop of last year's crappie just under 10 inches and good numbers of blue catfish (white river cats) in the 5 to 25 pound range. . . In another fishing development, a public notice of intent was repealed recently by the Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks removing all creel and slot limits on Lake Lamar Bruce. The lake is being drained for repair and renovation work and limits have been lifted during the draining process. Prescribed burning: The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks recently received funding through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for prescribed burning on private lands. The Fire on the Forty campaign is designed to assist landowners through cost-share opportunities for prescribed burning and to promote the appropriate use of fire on private lands in important areas.

Fishing for prizes: The annual Youth Fishing Rodeo is set for Saturday at Sardis Lake based out of the Cypress Point Recreation Area on the Lower Lake. A portion of the Lower Lake at Cypress Point will be netted off and stock with catfish. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with the rodeo starting at 7:30. Participants must be 1 - 15 years of age and accompanied by an adult. All participants must register. Participants must bring their own fishing equipment and bait. First Security Bank of Batesville and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) will be sponsoring the rodeo. Reward increased: The Humane Society of the U.S. and The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust recently announced a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for illegally shooting a bald eagle in the Iuka area of Tishomingo County. The HSUS reward adds to an existing Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and U.S. Fish and Wildlife reward of $2,500, for a total of $5,000.

Mowing tips: May and June are peak nesting months for many ground- nesting birds, including wild turkeys, Northern bobwhite and several species of grassland songbirds. These species prefer overgrown pastures, hay fields, road edges, and ditch banks as nesting sites, and this tendency makes them vulnerable to mowing and haying. In order to avoid injuring these species, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks recommends delaying mowing of these areas until after July 1. For land enrolled in certain federal conservation oriented cost-share programs, contracts may require that mowing be delayed until Aug. 15.
