ST. PAUL, Minn. - Scientists have found disappointing DNA evidence that invasive Asian carp are present in the scenic St. Croix River as far upstream as the dam at St. Croix Falls, Wis., the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced Thursday.
DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr also told reporters he was "very surprised" that similar testing found no traces of Asian carp in the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St. Paul, and more testing is planned while agencies scramble to try to stop the further spread of the large non-native fish.

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, The Conservation Fund, The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Blandin Paper Company (UPM) announced the completion of a working forest conservation easement that forever protects 187,876 acres of Northwoods forests, wetlands and shoreline currently owned by UPM, the largest conservation deal in the state's history.
Minnesota exemplifies a nationwide trend in forest loss. Private forest ownership across the United States is changing dramatically, and as the forest products industry consolidates, companies are forced to sell off their forestland, most often to land developers or investors. Minnesota has lost over a third of its industrial forestland in the last 20 years. The trend is accelerating: over the next 20 years, ...

[...] a new trail in the Twin Cities area is proof that park systems can create facilities that satisfy mountain bicyclists' desires while preserving a park's natural resources. MORC pledged $30,000 to the project, and the park district budgeted $47,000, funding half the project; a matching grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MnDNR) through Minnesota's State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) took care of the rest. "It's a combination of factors: the higher and narrower bridges, a narrower tread (often cutting across very steep side-slopes); steeper, more difficult climbs and descent; and more technical features like rock gardens, large rocks to ride over and optional features like a log ride," he says.

Lou Cornicelli, hunter and scientist, expected to find some lead particles in his deer.
That's largely how bullets work," said Cornicelli, big-game program coordinator for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. "They expand and often break apart, so to see some lead in a deer isn't surprising.
