REDLANDS - The City Council approved six conditional use permits Tuesday as part of a plan to expand two companies' mining operations in the Santa Ana River Wash. Robertson's Ready Mix and Cemex Construction Materials Pacific, LLC, applied for six conditional use permits - three each - that would allow the companies to expand their mining operations in the Santa Ana River Wash at the north end of the city. The plan includes at least 1,190 acres of quarries in the wash that lie in both Redlands and Highland city limits.

A state-owned quarry on the south edge of Camp Bonneville in east Clark County could see mining operations by 2009 under a plan that county officials say could save taxpayers nearly $1 million a year. The proposal by public works officials to conduct environmental studies and pursue permits for operations at the Livingston Quarry got a go-ahead from county commissioners Wednesday.

DUARTE - The Duarte City Council has established a $700,000 fund to combat an expected plan by Vulcan Materials Co. to expand its mining operations in Azusa near the Duarte border. Vulcan, which has operated in Azusa since 1956, mines stone and gravel near Fish Canyon. The company plans to mine an additional 80 acres west of its current operations.
