DUARTE - The Duarte City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to appeal a judge's ruling in favor of Azusa and a mining plan in the Azusa Rock Quarry.Duarte lost their original lawsuit that attempted to torpedo the amended Azusa Rock Quarry mining project due to their belief that an environmental report on the project was flawed, among other grievences."The council's decision to appeal continues Duarte's belief that the Vulcan EIR is seriously flawed and that destroying the Van Tassel ridge is the wrong thing to do," said Duarte City Manager Darrell George in a prepared statement.Judge Thomas McKnew ruled in favor of Azusa on May 9 on all counts presented to the court, including claims that the environmental impact report was flawed and that Azusa violated open meeting laws in appro...

REDLANDS - The City Council approved six conditional use permits Tuesday as part of a plan to expand two companies' mining operations in the Santa Ana River Wash.
Robertson's Ready Mix and Cemex Construction Materials Pacific, LLC, applied for six conditional use permits - three each - that would allow the companies to expand their mining operations in the Santa Ana River Wash at the north end of the city. The plan includes at least 1,190 acres of quarries in the wash that lie in both Redlands and Highland city limits.

A state-owned quarry on the south edge of Camp Bonneville in east Clark County could see mining operations by 2009 under a plan that county officials say could save taxpayers nearly $1 million a year.

DUARTE - The Duarte City Council has established a $700,000 fund to combat an expected plan by Vulcan Materials Co. to expand its mining operations in Azusa near the Duarte border.
Vulcan, which has operated in Azusa since 1956, mines stone and gravel near Fish Canyon. The company plans to mine an additional 80 acres west of its current operations.
