In April, the World Bank approved a $20 million loan to finance a major economic development program in Zambia. The program is a joint effort between the international community and the Zambia government to revitalize the local economy by reforming the public sector and improving that national business climate.
One of the biggest challenges faced by Zambia and many other African countries is how to use local resource reserves to generate wealth and sow the seeds to long-term growth. Indeed, despite this potentially huge source of income for the local population, many resource-rich developing nations remain desperately poor, often because of corrupt, irrational governments.

The world's largest gold-mining company, Newmont also has active or proposed operations in Nevada, Ghana, Uzbekistan, Australia, and Romania.

DENVER, April 27 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Representatives from Ghana, Indonesia, Peru, Romania, and Nevada today called on Newmont Mining, the world's largest gold producer, to urgently reform its human rights and environmental practices at its global operations. Speaking at the company's annual shareholders meeting, representatives demanded that Newmont fully respect human rights, stop intimidation of farmers, community members and individuals critical of its operations, and stop dumping mine wastes into the ocean. They also called on the company to permanently cancel plans for new, open-pit mines on densely populated farmland in Romania, in a Ghanaian forest reserve, and on a mountain in Peru that is a source of community drinking water.
