THE ATHABASCA Basin is home to one of the biggest uranium mining operations in the world. Stretching across the remote northern section of Canada's Saskatchewan province, it accounts for nearly a fifth of the world's uranium production each year.
An estimated 650 million pounds of the element are underground. Companies have set up dozens of exploratory operations.

Teck Cominco Ltd has agreed to acquire Fording Canadian Coal Trust in a cash and stock deal valued by the companies at about $14.1 billion. Under the terms of the deal, each unit of Fording will be exchanged for $82.00 in cash plus 0.245 of a Teck Class B share. Teck Cominco is an international mining company. The company has mining operations in Canada, Peru, and the US. Teck Cominco holds one of the world's largest reserves of zinc, and also mines gold, coal, and copper. The acquisition of Fording gives Teck Cominco full ownership of Elk Valley Coal. Teck estimates that purchase should provide a 50% boost to its 2009 core earnings.

The products that South Dakota trades with Canada include machinery, computers, metal products from the Black Hill Mining Operations and clothing. OTTAWA, May 23, 2012 /CNW/ - The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) expressed grave concern regarding the significant economic impact that the CP rail strike will have on mining communities and urged the Government of Canada to take immediate action to resolve the labour dispute.
The impact is felt strongly by mining companies dependent on rail to either transport fuel in, or transport products and by-products from operations. "A strike by CP workers will have a serious effect on the industry," said Pierre Gratton, MAC's President and CEO. "The shipment of fuel and other supplies to mine sites will be compromised as is the transport of mineral products.
