HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Next year, Governor-elect Tom Corbett and Pennsylvania's incoming legislature should do what seven other states will be doing on January 1 -- increasing the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation.
The planned increases -- automatic inflation-based adjustments ranging from 9 to 12 cents -- will modestly boost the incomes of approximately 647,000 minimum-wage workers in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont and Washington. The indexed increases came about through ballot initiatives in six states and 2005 legislation in the state of Vermont.

DAYTON -- For employees like Brenda Harrison of Dayton, who makes $8 an hour as a crew leader for a downtown fastfood restaurant, the increase in the minimum wage in Ohio from $5.15 to $6.85 an hour could be good news or bad news.
The new wage floor that begins Jan. 1 -- the first increase in Ohio since 1996 -- could mean Harrison and other more experienced workers at the restaurant will see a boost in their paychecks as well. But it also could mean her manager will have to delay any raises at all to meet the higher wage level for new hires.

STRUTHERS -- When steel mills still lined the smoke-choked Mahoning River valley, workers' lives followed a steady eight-hour rhythm: 11 to 7; 7 to 3; 3 to 11.
