  • For more than a decade, Eric Heil, who served as the town's manager, planner and attorney, worked with Rico's government to create a "new post-mining economy." They engaged in negotiations with real estate developer Rico Renaissance and its associates, owners of 2,000 acres in and around the town. After years of studies, community surveys and meetings, the town adopted a master plan in 2004. The developer promised to work with Rico to create a water treatment facility and sewer system, and also agreed to "the prohibition of all mineral rights exploration, leasing and development. CROWING OVER BOLERO'S proposed land acquisition in a Canadian radio interview, CEO Bruce Duncan exulted over "the capitalist government in the U.S." that "is keen to develop." • Why would a dairy person be concerned about leasing farmland for gas and oil development? Since dairy farms sit on farmland, it is an important topic for dairy farmers as well as other landowners. One message that was very clear at the Feb. 9 gas and oil lease session held at OARDC -- a long term lease is a long-term business agreement. Fortunately for us, this process started in Pennsylvania first. Becaus...

  • In 2009, the opera (acting with the urging of CSF) agreed - along with three other owners to lease those rights out for oil and gas exploration. None of the parties - including the opera and CSF - own the land or the water rights, but they control the mineral estate, which impacts both the quality of any profits generated from the land and the ground water. In return for leasing their share, the opera and CSF are set to receive a modest fraction of profits from extracted treasures. Hey, fair play, the opera is a struggling nonprofit and its mission is opera, not the environment. That's the line that SFO General Director Charles MacKay took in a Friday, Sept. 25 statement to the press. MacKay claimed that leasing out the mineral rights was the only way to honor the bequest it had receive...

  • The Oklahoma Wildlife Commission approved bids from Chesapeake Energy and Kettleman Energy for mineral leasing rights from the Department of Wildlife Conservation on Monday. Chesapeake was awarded the bid after being the lone bidder on 240 net mineral acres in the Washita County Wildlife Management Area. Chesapeake's bid will generate an estimated $350,000 over three years for the agency, which ODWC lands and mineral coordinator Kelly Roberson said was a "very fair offer" for leases on that site.
