At the outset of the 2006 season, when most of the talk about the Milwaukee Brewers centered on their up-and-coming younger players, general manager Doug Melvin had something else on his mind.
I told you at the first of the year that I wasn't as concerned about the young players as I was the veterans," Melvin said Tuesday during the club's season-ending media session at Miller Park. "I said if the veterans played well I thought we'd have a good year because young players make mistakes, no matter whether they're wearing a Green Bay Packers uniform or Milwaukee Brewers uniform.

They're going to be interesting again, but this time they wont sneak up on anybody. The big question for me is that bullpen. It could turn out to be great. Or horrible. There probably wont be an in-between. That's not a good park for [Eric Gagne] because the ball really flies there. I love their young players. I wonder if they've got too many guys out of position with [Ryan Braun] going to left and [Bill Hall] going to third. The manager, Ned Yost, got too uptight down the stretch last year....

MILWAUKEE - Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer, Bronson Arroyo pitched effectively into the seventh and the Cincinnati Reds used a six-run third inning to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-5 on Monday night.
Already ahead 1-0, the Reds sent 11 batters to the plate in the third, holding Chris Narveson (1-1) to his shortest outing in 38 career starts.

Last of a series
Nashville, Tenn. After a pratfall last September with the Milwaukee Brewers and a dismal showing in spring training when there was a job to be won, Ben Hendrickson realized he had done little to convince skeptics he could be a successful major-league pitcher.
