DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I would like to know about cholesterol. What part of the body makes it? Does it make bad as well as good cholesterol? What foods contain bad and good cholesterol? - B.A. ANSWER: Cholesterol is cholesterol; there is no good or bad. Most cholesterol is made in the liver. Cholesterol foods contribute only a minor fraction to total blood cholesterol. Saturated fat stimulates liver production of cholesterol. Saturated fat is the fat that surrounds meat and the fat that's found in whole-milk dairy products. Cholesterol has important body functions. It's a part of every cell's membrane. It's a component of many body hormones.
[Jerry Bos] doesn't' believe that the branding means as much in milk as in other categories. "The people that drink milk don't really care what brand it is," he said. "He either drinks milk or he doesn't. You don't get that brand loyalty.

You probably already know about Horizon, the international milk juggernaut based out of central Idaho. But unless you shop at a small number of farmer-friendly markets in Boise or the Wood River Valley, you probably don't know about Idaho's only other certified organic dairy, Saint John's. While Horizon's interpretation of organic standards have been the subject of controversy in recent years, there's nothing controversial about Peter Dill. When his cows gets colds, he gives them garlic. When weeds invade the pasture, he pulls them out by hand. Dill calls the approach "the joy of good work," and he tells BW he wants to stay just small enough for other local farmers to be able reach for the same dream. Some people think milk is milk. From what our customers tell us, that's not even ...
Findings from behavioral and psychological studies indicate that people regularly and predictably behave in ways that contradict some standard assumptions of economic analysis. Recognizing that consumption choices are determined by factors other than prices, income, and information illuminates a broad array of strategies to influence consumers' food choices. These strategies expand the list of possible ideas for improving the diet the diet quality and health of participants in the Food Stamp Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs to examine ways to improve the diet quality and health outcomes of their participants.

For many college students, the move into an apartment and out of the dorms means they have to feed themselves for the first time. No more meals made by Mom or the cafeteria ladies. Some students such as Gina Majestro, 19, a sophomore at WVU and an avid cook, wont suffer. Majestro comes from a long line of Italian cooks and has been preparing healthy meals at home for years. Im really excited and looking forward to it, she said. Even friends who dont cook are excited [about living in an apartment] to not be eating dorm food. Her friends might be planning to eat at Majestros apartment, but she said theyll have to fend for themselves most of the time. Theyll probably rely on microwave foods, she said. I tell them cooking isnt that hard you just follow the directions. Linda Bonasso settled...

As soon as Tet begins," [Thanh Trung] continues, "Never lift a broom, utter any harsh words or visit the sick. Very bad luck. Everyone must be in a good mood to 'receive the spring.' Remember-the Kitchen God is watching. "It's all about superstitions," Thanh emphasizes, "even the first non-family member who walks through the front door during Tet is chosen very carefully. They should be healthy, successful and prosperous, thereby bringing good fortune." The feast opens with wintermelon soup (see recipe, below), a broth flavored with lean pork loin, green onions, garlic, chunks of wintermelon (imagine a marriage between a turnip and a rutabaga) and dried dates. Next comes the thit kho to, or marinated soy pork belly, with chunks of pork belly that have marinated in soy sauce and sugar ...

There's no doubt about it. To have a healthy body you must give it all the nutrients it needs to grow and develop. But how do you do that? First of all, you need to understand that there are no good or bad foods, only good and bad eating patterns. All foods supply substances that your body needs to grow, have energy, and stay healthy, and all foods can be part of a healthy diet. A healthy diet includes grain products, vegetables, fruits, low-fat milk products, lean meats, fish, poultry, and dry beans. Choose fewer foods that are high in fat or sugar. It's the total amount and types of foods you eat over several days that make up a healthy or unhealthy diet.

By Jennifer LaRue Huget | The Washington Post Reduce your intake of "solid fats" such as saturated and trans fats; replace them with more healthful, unsaturated fats and oils. That's the advice from the federal government's 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Saturated and trans fats are believed to increase risk of certain chronic conditions and diseases, while unsaturated fats might help protect against them.
