The historical role of the military reserves is significantly changing. Once maintained in reserve as a militia, the force now is fully integrated with and controlled by the regular Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. After Vietnam, Army Chief of Staff Creighton Abrams implemented the Total Force policy for the Army by moving many support and logistical functions to the reserves. The Defense Department is moving even closer to total integration of the active military and the reserves under a concept called Continuum of Service. These changes would result in a fundamental shift in how the reserves are structured, trained, employed, and viewed in this country.

Because families of citizen-soldiers-men and women in the National Guard and Reserves-are widely dispersed within civilian communities, their access to military programs and resources is more complicated than that of families of active military members living on or near a base. With a rich history of addressing family and community needs, the Cooperative Extension System is in a unique position to provide families with information and support within their communities and to help them access additional community-based and military programs and resources. Family scientists in North Carolina received funding from the Healthy Marriage Initiative to strengthen citizen-soldier families by facilitating a partnership between family and consumer sciences agents and family assistance personnel fr...

Pakistan and other critics of the move by the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), which now has 46 members, have argued that, because India now has access to the international nuclear market, it can purchase foreign uranium for its nuclear power reactors and therefore keep its limited domestic uranium reserves for its military program, potentially allowing it to field a larger nuclear arsenal. According to Akram, because such admission would allow India to enhance its own nuclear arsenal, "Pakistan will be forced to take measures to ensure the credibility of its deterrence.

This holiday season, many merchants and companies are offering discounts to military personnel.
Active-duty members certainly deserve this, but what of the reservists? Those who are activated are almost immediately sent off to war. Soon after returning, they are discharged from active-duty service and revert to Reserve or Guard status. So the majority of the time they are eligible for these discounts, they are overseas.
