More than 2 million U.S. service members have gone to war in the past 10 years, often doing battle and experiencing trauma both physically and mentally.
But diagnosing the mental trauma -- commonly known as post- traumatic stress disorder -- has become a challenge for the military as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have evolved. The Army is leading a service-wide review into soldiers' mental health diagnoses, and military counselors often must work closely with command staff to determine if the diagnoses alone should keep a service member from returning to combat.
