Contamination from old military explosives has prompted state mine inspectors to close part of a southeastern Kanawha County surface coal mine that was getting rid of the material for the U.S. Department of Defense. State inspectors found traces of the explosive tetryl on part of Catenary Coal Co.'s Samples Mine and tetryl canisters at the mine's prep plant on Tuesday, said Caryn Gresham, spokeswoman for the Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training. The agency issued an imminent danger closure order because tetryl poses various health hazards.
