It may surprise some people to know that state government isn't all about politics and partisanship.
It's not always about whether House Speaker Mike Madigan is beating House Minority Leader Tom Cross over in the House or whether Senate President John Cullerton has bested his GOP foes up in the Senate.

BLOOMINGTON - Bill Brady, the Republican candidate for governor, said Tuesday he was ready to work with Democrats on pension reform and other controversial issues if elected, adding he thinks powerful House Speaker Michael Madigan "is looking for a leader ... that he can trust" to lead the state.
And I think Mike Madigan trusts me," Brady told The Pantagraph editorial board.

The 2010 election season has elicited many comparisons to 1994, when Republicans made huge inroads in state and national politics.
A wave of voters unsatisfied with Democrats pushed GOP lawmakers into the Statehouse and Congress. It was the only time in Mike Madigan's lengthy career that he didn't get to control the Illinois House a two-year stint that one of the speaker's longtime aides still calls the "Republican Reign of Terror.

Thursday, the governor's spokeswoman Cheryle Jackson told the Defender a tentative budget agreement had been reached between the governor, [Mike Madigan] and [Emil Jones Jr.] that will still produce millions for education. "This new money would come from savings in state pension reform," Jackson said. "There would still be a commitment of $300 million but without ties to gaming."

If Senate President John Cullerton and House Speaker Mike Madigan prevent a campaign finance reform measure from coming to a vote, it will prove what supporters of the bills have said about party leaders having too much power.
Senate Bill 3580 and House Bill 5008 are designed to plug a loophole left when a reform measure was approved last fall.
