DAYTON -- Harrison Twp. Chief Mike Lynch had 11 firefighters on duty in early August when the call came of a fully-involved fire at an 11-story, 232-room senior citizen apartment complex. It took 15 pieces of fire equipment from 11 different jurisdictions to extinguish the blaze that claimed the life of 64- year-old Nancy L. Ross.

HERMON Jim Carr Jr. of Clifton captured the pole in the qualifying race and then went on to win the Pickup Truck division with a dominating performance at Speedway 95 Wednesday night. Peter Drake of Corinth challenged Carr during the race, but couldn't pass him, and finished in second place. Dana Harlow of Bucksport finished third, David Gray of Orrington took fourth and Mike Lynch of Winterport captured fifth.

Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle has been trying to prosecute TAB (separate from his indictments of [Tom DeLay] and friends) for more than three years. Texas law forbids the use of corporate and union money in campaigns. Earle's case against TAB was based on the argument that the group's mailer campaign amounted to illegal corporate-funded electioneering. The TAB long has argued that the ads were legal because they didn't "expressly advocate" the election or defeat of a certain candidate (none of the mailers used such overt terms as "vote for," "defeat," "elect"). PITTSFIELD - Maine Central Institute's rushing attack gained 379 yards on 39 carries and scored six touchdowns to record a 60-12 high school football victory over Dexter Friday night. Nick Miller had 16 carries for 210 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Huskies and Shawn Bennett added 133 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns.
