My father's parents got Social Security old-age benefits, which spared my father from supporting them. This enabled him to pay for our college educations. Social Security initially excluded domestic and agricultural workers, which meant that most people of color did not qualify in the first decades of the program. The minimum wage still excludes agricultural workers. The parents of today's middle-aged people of color typically had to support their own parents, and so couldn't save for college tuition as easily as my parents saved for mine.
Of course effort and talent make a difference in climbing the staircase to prosperity. But for most white men, the staircase has been an escalator powered by public assistance. I saw this in my own family. My father had a relative who was unambitious,...

A recent government report said that 300,000 jobs were created in March. This caused the stock market to rise, but not by all that much. Investors are not sure whether the economy is creating jobs that will be viable for the long-term or whether they are just be filler jobs. The answer to this question will determine the prospects for both stocks and bonds.
As a nation, we are going through a massive change in the type of jobs available to recent graduates and laid-off employees. Global trade and the ever-increasing presence of technology allows fewer people to produce more. Consequently, many traditional well-paying jobs -- such as factory and middle-management positions -- will diminish over time.

TOMS BROOK, Va. -- The laundry room of Tami Huffman's split- level home in the Shenandoah Valley is filling up with cheese powder and freeze-dried ham, at the ready should her husband, Brian, lose his job anytime in the next 25 years. She carves a little bit out of their already-tight budget every month to buy some more.
This sort of stockpiling was once the purview of survivalists preparing for Armageddon.

This sort of stockpiling was once the purview of survivalists preparing for Armageddon. But Huffman's fear isn't the end of the world so much as the $5 basket of grape tomatoes she bypassed the other day at her local supermarket.

This study investigates gender diversity within the top 100 US firms. In particular, we study the gender diversity among the top executive officers listed in the 10-k or annual reports of the top 100 firms. Gender diversity is measured in two ways: by using the number of women serving as a top officer within the organization and by computing the proportion of women among the top officers. We further rank the firms on the basis of above-mentioned variables. There are no firms where the majority of the officers are women. Twenty firms have no female officers. Among these firms, Exxon Mobile and Phillip Morris International have highest number total executive officers listed on their 10-k. Johnson & Johnson has the highest gender diversity. Overall, there is a concerning lack of gender...
