River Hills -- Wisconsin expatriate Mark Scheibach wasn't quite sure where he was headed after winning his first round match in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Milwaukee Country Club on a dismal and damp Monday afternoon. But he did know where he wasn't going.
Brent Dietz is having quite the summer in his first full year competing in Connecticut State Golf Association amateur events. His latest accomplishment is his best one. Dietz held off Rob Tedoldi Jr. and reigning two-time champion Jeff Hedden to win the 20th CSGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Wee Burn Country Club.
BRIDGEHAMPTON, N.Y. - Todd Mitchell of Bloomington shot a 5-over- 77 Sunday at Atlantic Golf Club to tie for 11th place with a 148 total in the stroke-play portion of the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. Mitchell, the 2008 Mid-Am runner-up, advanced to the 64-player match play beginning today. He will meet Richie Taylor of Snellville, Ga. (152) in today's third match at 7:20 a.m. (CDT).
Tim Mickelson and Jordan Byrd have a lot in common. Mickelson is the head golf coach at the University of San Diego and Byrd is an assistant at Clemson University. Both reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship last year.
Bloomfield's Brian Whitman seeks a return to the U.S. Mid- Amateur Championship via Wednesday's qualifier at Morris County in Convent Station. Whitman will be joined by Haworth's Stuart Goldstein, Wyckoff's Ronald Cochran, Cliffside Park's Trevor Randolph, Little Falls' Drew McMahon, and Englewood's Steve Valahovic.
River Hills -- Mark Scheibach left Milwaukee Country Club Tuesday afternoon, the same way he entered on Saturday: with a huge smile on his face. His Mid-Amateur Championship experience was over but it lasted longer than he thought it would and probably longer than it should have, as well.
What: The 28th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship is open to amateur golfers who will have reached their 25th birthday on or before Sept. 6 and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 3.4. When: Today through Thursday.
Nick Morreale had the rare distinction Tuesday of being in the first group out at Orchard Park Country Club and the last group in. His reward for spending eight-plus hours in sweltering temperatures -- and surviving a sudden-death playoff -- was his third Buffalo District Golf Association Mid-Amateur championship in four years.
River Hills -- Steve Wilson of Ocean Springs, Miss., is pretty well known down on the Gulf Coast, where he owns two gas stations and is one of the best amateur golfers in the region. Of course, a quarterback who grew up just down the road in Kiln has a slightly bigger profile.
