[...] cows continue to graze, and the microorganisms in their intestines continue to utilize cellulose, which humans can't digest, to make food products - a gigantic solar energy transaction that helps to explain, along with the proximity of huge urban markets, why dairying is still viable in the Champlain Valley. Others might cite the addition to the sports center in Middlebury, the goal of rehabilitating Newton Academy in Shoreham, the expansion of the Jehovah's Witness hall in Middlebury, a similar project by the Unitarian Universalists, the $2.8 million reconstruction of the historic Grange in Ferrisburgh, or the Counseling Service of Addison County's construction project on Exchange Street.

The microorganisms that control decomposition in your pile require both carbon and nitrogen in order to do their work. You will want a relatively equal amount of both along with adequate air and moisture, and it's best to err on the carbon rich side. High carbon materials are referred to as "brown." These include wood chips, dried leaves, sawdust and cornstalks. Materials that have a high nitrogen content are called "green," and these include grass clippings, fresh leaves and cuttings, stems, manure and blood meal. The important thing is to keep your pile as moist as a damp sponge and to stir or mix it as often as possible to keep it aerated. Working 24/7 to break down your compost pile are macroorganisms like earthworms, mites, grubs, centipedes, flies, spiders, ants and beetles....
INDIANAPOLIS -- One of the nation's largest dairy cooperatives plans to tap a plentiful energy source -- manure from the farms' cows -- to power its fleet of milk-delivery trucks. By early next year, Fair Oaks Farms in northwestern Indiana plans to have 42 new delivery trucks running on compressed natural gas created by harnessing microorganisms to turn the cows' manure into biogas.
In offices in a business incubator building at New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, Stephen Browand is growing a company he says has the potential to make the world safe from hospital superbugs and anthrax to stained carpets and smelly sneakers. Browand is president and chief executive officer of BioNeutral Group Inc., which is developing cleaning and disinfecting formulas that neutralize harmful microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, mold and spores.
LOS ANGELES - Ever wonder what microorganisms do on a Saturday night? In professor Derek Lovley's lab at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, doctoral candidate Zarath Summers and her colleagues made a point to find out. In the process, Summers discovered a new cooperative behavior in bacteria. Interspecies electron transfer" entails one microorganism forming a direct electrical connection to another.
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have announced that assistance will be available to farmers whose crops were damaged by severe flooding from Tropical Storms Irene and Lee. USDA and FDA are working closely together to ensure that farmers with flood-damaged crops that cannot be marketed are compensated for their losses. FDA considers ready-to-eat crops whose edible portion has been in contact with flood waters to be adulterated due to potential exposure to sewage, animal waste, heavy metals, pathogenic microorganisms, or other contaminants. Therefore, these crops should not enter the food or animal feed supply. Crops insured by federal crop insurance or by the Noninsured Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) are covered when floodwater...
Q: I know I have poor soil, but I am frustrated on just how to improve my soil. My plants always seem to suffer from either too much water or not enough. It all seems intimidating. What do you recommend? A: It is all about increasing the organic matter in your soil. The No. 1 thing a gardener can do is to add organic matter to their gardens. Compost is the organic (once living) material that is left when plant matter breaks down and decomposes; compost contains some minerals, water and microorganisms as well as the organic matter. It can also be used as a soil amendment to improve the health and texture of your soil. This should be done at every opportunity.
Probiotics -- microorganisms that are supposed to help your digestion and boost your immune system -- are one of the hottest food trends of the decade. Just like these "good" bacteria, the number of yogurts, drinks, pills and so on has multiplied in the past few years.
Dr. Jeffery D. Long will discuss his new book, "Jainism: An Introduction" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in Room 212, Hoover Center for Business, Elizabethtown College. A reception and book signing will follow. Jainism is a little- understood religion of India, best known for its radical practice of nonviolence. Monks wear face masks to prevent inhalation of insects and microorganisms and sweep the ground in front of them to ensure that living creatures are not inadvertently crushed by their progress.
