  • There is at least one other department that should be involved in choosing purveyors of products and services: marketing. There are two main reasons marketers' opinions matter: First, in many cases they use member data from such systems as the core processor and the bill-pay engine to inform and direct their campaigns. Second, different vendors' products may provide vastly divergent member experiences. Creating a consistent, positive member experience is central to marketing's success. Joyce Banish, VP/marketing at $1.3 billion Michigan State University Federal Credit Union and a CUES member, says marketing's ability to extract data was important when her CU chose its core system. Of course, there is a lot marketing can learn from IT and accounting, too. To make the best joint vendor de...

  • Michigan State University Federal Credit Union has gained traction with a marketing program that helps a lucky couple of students get started in the real world and lets all graduating seniors know the credit union is there for them their entire lifetimes. Real World Makeover, now in its fourth year, gets plenty of local publicity -- it helps that the CU partners with a local television and radio station for the event. Many student-members don't realize they can continue their memberships after graduation.

  • It's hard to argue these days against the benefits of "going green." Whether you're doing it to improve your bottom line, strengthen your brand, or out of a sense of social responsibility, there are many good reasons for credit unions to reduce their footprint on the planet. But one advantage that often goes overlooked could be the most important -- at least it involves the most vital part of your institution -- your employees. Now more than ever, employees want to feel like they're making a difference at their jobs and, for that feeling, they often look to the principles of their employer. On the environmentally aware MSU campus, employees have taken a sense of ownership in the new headquarters. Green HR practices can be simple to implement and will often cut expenses. Some of the most...

  • When the CAN-SPAM Act took effect Jan 1, 2004, a lot of credit union marketers groaned -- one more do-and-don't list to worry about. Well, today there seems to be a strong feeling compliance has not been that terrible. The law has prompted a lot of marketers to look at their e-mail practices. eMarketing Strategies' Ruth Stevens said CAN-SPAM seems fairly clear and straightforward. What is difficult is the necessity of gaining permission from members or customers to contact them. If you are just getting into e-mail marketing, Michigan State University Federal Credit AVP/E-Commerce April Globes has some advice. 1. If you use a vendor for e-mail marketing, consider what address will appear in members' e-mail. 2. Address your member by first and last name. 3. Use a very specific format to g...

  • Just a decade ago, there were more than 10,000 credit unions (CU) in the US, served by more than 40 corporate credit unions. As CUs merged, some of the corporate CUs that serve them have also merged to maintain a competitive seat in the shrinking marketplace. Those that want to be bigger, especially geographically, are pushing the flow toward mergers among corporate credit unions right now. For example, more than two-thirds of the voting members of the then Central Credit Union Fund Inc agreed that a merger was a strategically sound idea, reports Jim Van Arsdale, CEO of the $245 million, 212-member credit union. The corporate had been exploring many ways to grow for some time, and also was looking at options for maintaining and expanding services to its members. Corporate credit unions ...
