FAIRFAX, Va., /U.S. Newswire/ -- Former presidents Bush and Clinton have joined with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the nation's leading higher education assistance organization, to spearhead a multi-million dollar campaign for rebuilding campuses and replenishing scholarships along the Gulf Coast.
Katrina washed away many things, but we can't allow this disaster to bring further tragedy," said former president, Bill Clinton, about the Wave of Hope campaign. "We cannot afford to lose these schools that are important to our communities, our children and our future.

I think he has an intimate understanding of the challenges HBCUs face and the role UNCF plays in supporting these vital institutions," said Dr. Sebetha Jenkins, president of UNCF member institution Jarvis Christian College and Chair of UNCF member presidents. "Not only has he successfully led a UNCF college, but he has also taught at two UNCF colleges and is a graduate of a UNCF member institution.

The United Negro College Fund is asking for generous donations "so that these colleges will have the resources they need to carry on their recovery," stated Michael Lomax, Ph.D, president and CEO, UNCF.
Founded in 1915, Xavier University is a four-year, private, liberal arts institution affiliated with the Catholic Church. Its president, Norman Francis, Ph.D, recently stated, "As president of Xavier University for nearly 40 years, I've seen many miracles. Now, perhaps more than ever, we are in need of another miracle.
Our prayers are with all those whose homes and families were ravaged by Hurricane Katrina," stated Dr. Lomax. "These colleges need help, and they need it now."

Dr. Michael Lomax, past president of Dillard University and newly appointed president and CEO of the United Negro College Fund, gave the keynote address. A former Merrill Scholar at Morehouse College, Dr. Lomax hailed the occasion as a chance for [Charles Merrill, Jr.]'s "Commonwealth family" and "Morehouse family" finally to meet.
Mr. Merrill, an heir to the Merrill-Lynch fortune, served as chairman of Morehouse's board for fifteen years in the '60s and early '70s. Dr. Lomax saw Merrill's commitment to historically black colleges as remarkable in its depth and foresight, "if Commonwealth has been his greatest work and most enduring legacy, we at Morehouse and Spelman believe that his work in Atlanta is a competitive second.
