Many memoirs have agendas, tacit or otherwise. Some writers want to tell their side of a controversy, others have scores to settle, and some are just exercises in chest-thumping.
When Michael Lindsay-Hogg sat down to write about his five decades as a theater and movie director, he was mimicking in print what he'd done on stage and in film: telling stories. Because he'd shot early videos of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and other rock bands in the early 1960s, and because his mother, the actress Geraldine Fitzgerald, gave him proximity to actors such as Humphrey Bogart and Roddy McDowall and directors including Sidney Lumet and Orson Welles, he thought there would be interest.

It is refreshing to encounter this memoir by Michael Lindsay- Hogg. His life was haunted by a specter, and yet he is able - on paper, anyway - to bear it lightly with consummate grace. The specter in question was none other than the overwhelming figure of Orson Welles, who may or may not have been his father and flitted in and out of his life like a benevolent if detached deus ex machina. (Look at the picture of the young author and decide for yourself if you don't want to wait for the book's denouement.)
At the end of "Luck and Circumstance," Mr. Lindsay-Hogg notes drily, "In writing this book, I have come to learn of many lies and deceptions." What makes his story in these pages so attractive is his unwillingness to whine: He concentrates on luck brought to him by the odd circumstance...

LOS ANGELES - In his recently published memoir, "Luck and Circumstance," Michael Lindsay-Hogg discusses his long, storied career as a director of film ("Let It Be," "The Object of Beauty"), theater ("The Normal Heart," "Agnes of God") and TV ("Brideshead Revisited"), his Oscar-nominated actress-mother Geraldine Fitzgerald ("Wuthering Heights"), and his romantic liaisons.
But at the heart of the book is his search for his real father. Though his mother was married to Edward Lindsay-Hogg when he was born in 1940, Michael Lindsay-Hogg learned from his mother when he was 16 that there was talk that his father was Orson Welles, the seminal writer-director of 1941's "Citizen Kane." Fitzgerald and Welles had worked together on Broadway in the late 1930s. His mother told him that the rumor wasn...

Question: Does Lindsay Lohan have any recollection at all of being in rehab? Seems like a misty memory. She's out there sipping champagne and stealing purses - at least that's what the tabs would have us believe.
If we're to believe half of the scoop that's swirling about her, well, she's not sitting at home reading books and drinking herbal tea. Busy girl, that one.
