Patriots will play with heavy hearts First Colonial will begin the season this week in mourning after the recent death of senior opposite hitter Eric Sorg. Sorg was part of an outstanding senior class, including first-team All-Tidewater outside hitter Mason Walker, Eric Larsson, Michael Miller, Chase Tolison and Townsend Hirst. Sorg died Sunday after injuries sustained in a fall. "We all had a meeting about it," Miller said. "We're all a close group. (Sorg would) want us to keep playing. We'll play volleyball and cope." Writer Michael Hirst, who also wrote Elizabeth (starring Cate Blanchett), shows [Henry VIII] for the intellectual and sporty royal he was, and explores both the love triangles and political in-fighting of his reign. We see Henry bed-hop, neglect his wife, dismiss his daughter and vacillate between the diplomatic manipulations of Cardinal Wolsey (Sam Neill) and the humanist philosophies of Sir Thomas More (Jeremy Northam). Add to that the saber rattling with France and Spain plus the intrigue, back-stabbing and class conflict of the royal court, and you've got one seriously packed hour-long drama that's almost worthy of The L Word's Sunday time slot.

Sunday afternoon's two-hour musical extravaganza at Christ Church Methodist was organized by director Joseph Janisch and other honchos of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus, to raise money for the funding-troubled orchestra it serves. Sonically, it was a resounding success; financially, it was disappointing, given the efforts expended by the volunteer performers - who might have outnumbered the $10 donors. The generous program began with Russell Robinson's a cappella arrangement of "The Star-Spangled Banner" for male quartet. It was a bit offbeat, tunewise, but the words were official, and Mark Scohy, Michael Bevers, Blaine Hess and Chuck Hirst sang it with conviction.
