The First Stage Make Believe Ball is the one night of the year the kids don't have to just watch mom and dad get all gussied up for a night on the town. They get to put on their Sunday best on Saturday night. So on Feb. 28, the halls at the Milwaukee Hilton were filled with plenty of darling little girls in equally cute dresses while most of the boys appeared in the de rigueur navy blazer with khaki pants, fidgeting with their ties.
The 15th annual ball benefits the local children's theater group. There was a huge contingent of folks there from the Arzbaecher family. Bob Arzbaecher and his wife, Amy, brought their three daughters, Megan, Kristin and Lauren. Also there were Bob's brother and sister-in-law Tom and Heidi and their kids Hugo and Brianne, as well as his twin sister, Mary Bet...

I remember watching the Memorial Day parades in the early 1950s when, as a boy, I wore a red paper poppy pinned to my jacket in honor of fallen soldiers. It's a tradition carried on today by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
I learned that the "Buddy Poppy" originated around 1918 when Moina Michael, a Georgia native, was inspired by the poem "In Flanders Field" to make paper poppies, an idea that led to the "Memorial Poppy" becoming a national symbol.

Kayla Jo Flanders was born to Michael and Kelly Flanders on March 23 at Maine Medical Center, on her due date. She weighed 8 pounds, was 20 inches long and looked just like her sister, Tara, when she was born, their mother said.
Kayla and her 3-year-old sister have a special connection. Tara was the first in the family to sense that her mother was pregnant. Even before Kelly found out she was expecting, Tara would tell people that her mother had a baby in her belly. Michael and Kelly asked Tara to choose the baby's name, and Kayla was the instant answer.

John McCraes poem In Flanders Fields verse invoking images of wind-blown poppies between the crosses, row on row that mark the resting place of the fallen memorializes those who died fighting in World War I.
In 1915, inspired by that poem, a lady named Moina Michael came up with one of her own in support of her proposal that citizens wear red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who had died serving their nation during war.
