Years ago when I was working in a different place, it got out that one of that city's leading professional athletes was having financial problems. Checks were bouncing, cars were being repossessed and liens were being placed against a mansion.
In the days before the Internet's wildfire nature and celebrity tabloid TV, it caused a sensation. But beyond speculation of where a multimillionaire's money had gone, there was a question of whether any of it was relevant to the sports pages.

NORMAL - Kevin Tokarski led off the Illinois State half of the first inning with a solid single to left field.

It might be somewhat impractical to point out that a baseball player has begun a season without a home run in his first nine games.

When Washington left fielder Michael Morse strolled out of the Potomac Nationals' dugout Tuesday to take batting practice, the 6- foot-5 slugger looked out of place among his temporary teammates at Pfitzner Stadium.
Morse, who has been on the disabled list since spring training with a torn right lat muscle, played with the Single-A Nationals on Tuesday and Wednesday during a rehab assignment. If he's activated when Washington begins its homestand Friday against Atlanta, manager Davey Johnson said, then Morse will be in the lineup.

SALISBURY, Md. - The West Virginia Power opens its four-game road trip with a 3-0 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds Wednesday at Arthur Perdue Stadium. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Power.

Surprise, Ariz. Like the Japanese soldiers who emerged from Pacific islands years later thinking World War II was still on, holdouts somehow remain on the 2003 Richie Sexson trade.
These are, it should be noted, some of the same people who still believe the Milwaukee Brewers were fools for moving Lyle Overbay last December to make way for Prince Fielder.

With Opening Day drawing near, Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson has reached the point of spring training where he's making sure he's exhausted all options while whittling the roster to 25.
Question marks surround the health of left fielder Michael Morse (lat strain), closer Drew Storen (elbow-joint inflammation), starter Chien-Ming Wang (hamstring strain) and, perhaps to a lesser extent, first baseman Adam LaRoche (foot bone bruise). So Johnson has been running through his contingency plans.

When the Minnesota Twins lost first baseman Justin Morneau to a back injury in mid-September, manager Ron Gardenhire said his team would need others to step up and fill the void.
Count right fielder Michael Cuddyer among the others.
