Native American Mass: At 6 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, 131 Cathedral Place, the Most Rev. Michael J. Sheehan, archbishop of Santa Fe, will celebrate the annual Native American Mass in honor of all the artists and their families participating in the Indian Market as well as the Pueblo tribes of Northern New Mexico. The Most Rev. Andrew Pataki, retired bishop of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Passaic, died Thursday of injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident. He was still active as a priest, serving at churches in Linden and Perth Amboy. Bishop Andrew, 84, was appointed by Pope John Paul II in 1995 as the third bishop of the Passaic Eparchy, or diocese, and enthroned the following year in a ceremony at the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel in Passaic attended by hundreds.
Today at St. George Orthodox Cathedral, my family will celebrate the six-month memorial of my dear grandfather, Lee Michael Lewis, who went to heaven this past August, after a long and fruitful life. I find it most fitting to commemorate the wonderful man whom I love to call "Giddo" by sharing some aspects of his character with you. Giddo approached life courageously! He never backed down, not once. In 1923, he accompanied his mother and younger siblings on a small ship across the Atlantic Ocean to come to America from Lebanon. He had only received word by mail that his father and other siblings would be waiting for him in West Virginia or America.

Archbishop Michael J. Sheehan greeted Gov.-elect Susana Martinez at the entrance to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi on Friday evening, then welcomed her and her entourage inside for a formal blessing. Martinez was accompanied by her husband, recently retired Dona Ana County Undersheriff Chuck Franco, and other family members and supporters. Police closed off Cathedral Place briefly before Martinez emerged into 8-degree weather from a brand-new, silver Ford Flex SEL, a crossover SUV/wagon.
