The St. John's Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, 8715 Woodward Ave., will celebrate its 91st anniversary on Sunday, June 22, at 3 p.m. The theme is "Cherishing the Past, Embracing the Future.
St. John's Church was officially organized on July 18, 1917. Its first building was located on Dubois and Catherine (now Madison). After two years at this location, the church purchased a much larger edifice at St. Aubin and Maple and worshipped there for over 35 years.
The church's elegant stained glass windows are touted as some of the finest in the state of Michigan.

The revival will begin with Bishop Carolyn Tyler Guidry, the second woman to appointed Bishop is the history of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Bishop Guidry is not a stranger to [Emmanuel], or the Southern California area. Bishop Guidry's ministry originated here. She is formerly the Presiding Elder of the Los Angeles Pasadena District of which Emmanuel is a part. Bishop Guidry is currently the Presiding Prelate of the 16th District of the AME Church. She presides over 94 churches with 10,000, members in the Caribbean, and European regions which include Jamaica, Haiti, and England. Bishop Guidry is "serving well" in this capacity.

It is my hope that we will plan projects for frequent missions trips long into the future. I hope the members of the AME Church and their friends will realize that we owe Haiti and Malawi much more than a quick response of emergency aid. When adrenalin for emergency assistance fade, what will we do then? Many people have asked, how do I help? Initially we asked all the pastors of the AME Church to use at last two Sundays as a time for special offerings to be raised and sent to the Fifth Episcopal District Fund for disaster relief. We are extending that initial request for at lease through the month of February.
