Three United Methodist churches that serve the Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn areas will merge into one by the end of the year, with a member of the merger committee saying the new church will be stronger and better able to serve the community.
The Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn and Baybrook United Methodist churches will merge and be based out of the Brooklyn Heights church on Townsend Avenue, said Don Gwaltney, a member of the Brooklyn church. The new church will be called the Brooklyn Community United Methodist Church, he said.

Many hands make light work. Some Churchland Girl Scouts are putting that thought into practice with a donation drive for the Portsmouth Humane Society. The society is moving into new digs next month and the drive will provide needed items for the animals. Several local organizations are hosting an angel tree, which includes dog and cat ornaments made by the girls. The angel tag is a picture of a humane society dog or cat on one side and a list of requested supplies on the other. SEARSPORT The first time Lois Malisk walked into a church sanctuary instead of going to Sunday school, Onward Christian Soldiers was being played by the organist.
Malisk, 86, of Stockton Springs sang the hymn again Sunday at a combined service of the Searsport and North Searsport United Methodist churches.
