The click of Modernism Julius Shulman, who died last year at 98, was arguably the most significant photographer of architecture, ever. And if we're talking about the documentation of the Case Study Houses and other shining examples of mid-century American Modernism, he was simply the best. He made stylish buildings look even more amazing than they were, though architects didn't always like what he did. Richard Neutra, for example, was scandalized when Shulman brought a lot of furniture to his shoots. In the 2009 film Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman, Judy McKee, the photographer's daughter, says, "My father would carry half of our household furniture around with him, which probably gave Richard Neutra a heart attack when he saw him drive up with all these props, because...
GREENWOOD, Maine -- Matt Hancock was coaching his daughter's basketball team on July 6, when he got the call from his wife that the Mt. Abram ski lodge was ablaze. In this small community, the news went viral in a rural way -- people calling their friends and showing up at the Mt. Abram parking lot to watch the firefighters pump thousands of gallons of water on the burning lodge.

Here the village may become the center of our world, but should we receive distressing news from home, we immediately feel ourselves dislocated, distanced from what has now become the axis of our concerns.9 Similarly, in dreaming the spatiality of the dream is organized according to affective values: In dreaming as in myth we learn where the phenomenon is to be found by feeling that towards which our desire goes out, what our heart dreams, on what our life depends. [...] far we have spoken of the experience of inside spaces from the perspective of those who dwell in them.

AFTER EXTENSIVE study and travel in the 1820s, French architect Jean-Ignace Hittorff published an illustrated book of his remarkable theories and reconstruction drawings of polychromy in Greek architecture. Though the ancient temples had long been known only as worn stone ruins, Hittorff made first-hand observations of tiny flecks of pigment still clinging to the buildings, and based on his findings depicted the structures with lavish and treatments of multicolored paint. He thereby unleashed an academic debate that continued for decades, if not centuries. How could viewers, long familiar with the somber iconic piles of antique remains (perhaps only through published illustrations), accept these sudden reconstitutions of effusively variegated form? Projecting metal type onto the face of...
