In order to understand the magnitude of the problem of mental illness in black males, we must first talk about it, recognize its existence and seek the necessary counseling to eradicate it," [Bill Owens] said. "That is the beginning of getting your minds right!
"We are hoping this event will help put us on the map," said Nyjah Wyche, project coordinator for HELP. "To get [black males] to recognize that they are worthy of equal health care, worthy of taking care of themselves ... this is to get brothers talking about mental health issues so that they can become more aware and not afraid to take some time and really evaluate what's going on in their lives," said Wyche.

On the day that Katherine Paulson was shot and killed by a Kennebunk police officer, her mother told her she had to get on medication, call a doctor or voluntarily go somewhere to get help for her mental health problems, according to information from the state Attorney General's Office.
Paulson, 39, was killed on March 27 by a police officer who was sent to her home because her mother reported a non-physical domestic disturbance.

Mental health advocates, lawmakers and state officials must address a variety of issues to determine how West Virginia should allocate about $12 million to improve behavioral health services, members of a new task force say.
