• Airport Approves Contracts for $52 Million -- Confident U.S. Will Help Pay

Memphis airport officials approved more than $52 million in contracts Thursday contingent on getting federal grants to cover improvements ranging from family restrooms to a new screening system for checked baggage. Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority officials were confident grants from the Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Homeland Security will materialize, despite budget-cutting fervor in Washington. • Airport Set to Buy Office Park -- For Acquisition Near Fedex Superhub

The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority will take advantage of a down real estate market to buy out an office and distribution park near the FedEx superhub for as much as $12 million. The authority voted Thursday to approve the purchase from BICO Partners, an entity of Belz Investment Co., which developed warehouses and offices on the property under long-term land leases dating to 1979 and 1984.

Although the looming shutdown of the federal government will have little immediate effect on the Mid-South, it has cast uncertainty over such events as a Mississippi River inspection trip and the anniversary re-enactment of the Battle of Shiloh.
