HERMON - As curious locals and passing motorists watched, employees of Thomas DiCenzo Inc. and its subcontractors undertook the painstaking task of removing the town's Soldier's Monument from Hermon Corner, the spot it has occupied since it was erected in 1901.
The monument was to be reinstalled Thursday at its new home at Hermon Veterans Memorial Park, located in front of Hermon Elementary School. The veterans park houses another stone monument - dedicated to those who are serving or have served in the military - as well as a gazebo.

BLOOMINGTON - Memorial Day is a time to honor fellow citizens who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation. We remember those who died in military service with prayer, graveside visits and parades. We also erect monuments of stone in their name, with one exceptional example found at Miller Park in Bloomington.
Dedicated Memorial Day, May 30, 1913, the towering McLean County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument includes eight bronze tablets with the names of 6,053 local residents who fought in the American Revolution, War of 1812, Black Hawk War, Mexican War, Civil War and Spanish-American War.

Thirty years after the Vietnam War ended, veterans will see a monument raised for them in Memorial Park's ring of honor.
Set to be finished by the Veterans Day holiday in November, a small concrete marker will honor those who served, including the 619 Coloradans who died during 17 years of the conflict. Buried under it will be a 7 1/2-foot-long vault filled with flags, wartime letters, photos and medals.

WASHINGTON - After years of quiet memorial ceremonies and agitation for a permanent monument for workers who die on the job, thousands of bricks have been put into place on a grassy campus in suburban Silver Spring, Md.
One brick is etched with the name of Scott Watson, who died in 1992 at the Bethlehem Steel mill in Sparrows Point, Md., on a shift that was supposed to go to his friend Jerry Ernest.
