This year we have lost two legendary veteran Black lawmakers, both of whom symbolized the promise and fulfillment of the struggle for political representation in the halls of Congress. Parren J. Mitchell, Maryland's first Black member of Congress, and Augustus F. Hawkins, the first Black to represent the state of California in the House of Representatives, were two pioneering figures who understood power and used their status to address inequities in our society. Maryland's newest member of Congress, Frank M. Kratovil Jr., will have a relatively short trip from his district on the Eastern Shore to his new office on Capitol Hill. • Looking Back On the Elections

Now the contest is now between [Ben Cardin], 19-term member of Congress, and [Michael Steele]. The guessing now is whether Blacks in Maryland will support Cardin or Steele and, if so, to what degree. Prince George's County, the largest affluent Black majority county in the country, increased its registration by 55,000 since 2002, the largest Democratic increase in the state. But it appears that now that [Kweisi Mfume] is out of the picture, some of them will vote for Republican Michael Steele, especially since Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons and RadioOne empresario Kathy Hughes endorsed Steele. I wonder if that was. what Simmons and Hughes were betting on.

• Away We Go: A House Steeped in History

Make a resolution to discover historic Marietta - the ancestral home of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Duvall - located in Glenn Dale. Prince George's County's distinguished son was born at Marietta in 1752. At age 19, he moved to Annapolis to enter public service, a commitment that would span 64 years. Over this time period, Duvall's exemplary career brought him into service as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and the U.S. Congress along with becoming a judge for the Maryland Supreme Court, the first Comptroller of the U.S. Treasury, and an associate justice for the nation's highest court.

Jones receives Woman of the Year Award Gladys Jones, director of administrative services for the Prince Frederick campus of the College of Southern Maryland, has received the Concerned Black Women of Calvert County's Harriet Tubman Woman of the Year Award. Jones was recognized for her years of service to the community. She is the chair of the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the United Way of Calvert County Finance Committee, the 5th Congressional District Women's Network Advisory Committee and the Calvert County Compensation and Review Board, and is secretary of the National Congress of Black Women, Calvert County chapter. Jones has bachelor's and master's degrees from Sojourner- Douglass College. She has worked at the College of Southern Maryland since 1992.
