  • This year we have lost two legendary veteran Black lawmakers, both of whom symbolized the promise and fulfillment of the struggle for political representation in the halls of Congress. Parren J. Mitchell, Maryland's first Black member of Congress, and Augustus F. When President Lyndon Johnson launched his "War on Poverty," Hawkins was one of the administration's most vocal supporters and used his pos...

  • Maryland's newest member of Congress, Frank M. Kratovil Jr., will have a relatively short trip from his district on the Eastern Shore to his new office on Capitol Hill. • Now the contest is now between [Ben Cardin], 19-term member of Congress, and [Michael Steele]. The guessing now is whether Blacks in Maryland will support Cardin or Steele and, if so, to what degree. Prince George's County, the largest affluent Black majority county in the country, increased its registration by 55,000 since 2002, the largest Democratic increase in the state. But it appears that now that [Kweisi Mfume] is out of the picture, some of them will vote for Republican Michael Steele, especially since Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons and RadioOne empresario Kathy Hughes endorsed Steele. I wonder if that was. what Simmons and Hughes were betting on.

  • Members of Congress, even with supercommittee powers, are incapable of cutting spending. With the public debt growing more and more out of control, something has to be done. So House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, joined his ranking member, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, Maryland Democrat, in reviving the idea of a line-item veto on Wednesday. Mr. Van Hollen explained in an interview with The Washington Times that this is an idea both political parties can support. "We obviously have different views of the role of government, but everybody benefits when taxpayers feel that their dollars are being spent wisely," he said. "This is to make sure we don't have any more bridges to nowhere.
