Since its founding in Roxbury, Massachusetts, in July 2004, PDA has aggressively worked an "inside/outside" strategy, networking progressive Democratic elected officials inside the Beltway with grassroots Democrats and progressive movement activists across the country. PDA was the driving force in the passage of resolutions opposing the war in Iraq by eight state Democratic Party meetings. The organization also was instrumental in the passage of resolutions in 10 states calling for the impeachment of President Bush. PDA is often referred to by Congressional Progressive Caucus (www.congressionalprogressivecaucus.org) Executive Director Bill Goold as the CPC's field operation, because PDA has built relationships with members of Congress by delivering grassroots support for their initiativ...

Republican congressional leaders stressed a willingness Wednesday to extend a Social Security payroll tax cut due to expire at the end of the year, setting up a year-end clash with Democrats over how to pay for a provision at the heart of President Barack Obama's jobs program. House Speaker John Boehner said flatly that any tax cut extension will be offset by cuts elsewhere in the budget to avoid raising federal deficits. Numerous Republican officials noted that Obama had said the same thing was true of the plan he unveiled in a nationally televised speech to Congress in September. The events in Congress, coupled with Obama's fresh appeal for renewal of the payroll tax cut while speaking in Scranton, Pa., indicated that leaders in both parties want to seek a compromise less than a week ...

Two take-aways from Sunday nights 60 Minutes on CBS TV: No wonder public approval of Congress is at an all-time low of single-digit percentages. And no wonder Brian Baird burned out as a Congressman.
The retired U.S. representative from Washingtons 3rd Congressional District was interviewed during a 60 Minutes feature about members of Congress reaping huge investment dividends using insider information in ways that could put any of the rest of us behind bars. Baird said: One line in a bill in Congress can be worth millions and millions of dollars to a member of Congress who picks up clues during testimony and deliberations for bills. Yet the politicians allow themselves to bypass insider-trading laws.

Former Rep. Fred Eckert read the on-line version of The Buffalo News from his home in Raleigh, N.C. Thursday and couldn't refrain from weighing on the story about the Town of Greece, where he was born and which he represented over the years as supervisor, state senator and member of Congress (1985-1987).
He called the story about Greece as the epicenter of the hot race for the 26th Congressional District "right on." And, perhaps not at all surprisingly, the former Republican House member added his endorsement for fellow Republican Jane L. Corwin.

S. Rep. Mike Pompeo wasn't surprised Monday the bipartisan 12- member congressional committee assigned the task of slashing $1.2 trillion from the federal budget failed to forge a deal.
Inability of the 'supercommittee' to come to an agreement to further reduce the deficit illustrates the strong need for a balanced budget amendment to keep Congress accountable," said Pompeo, who serves the 4th District encircling Wichita.

MAXINE WATERS (D- 35th) is recognized as one of the most powerful representatives in Congress, a fighter for her constituents. She goes where the action is and never retreats from a challenge in defending those whom she represents. When speculation arose about her leaving Congress and running to be a supervisor she stated, "Congress is where I belong because it is where I believe I can do the maximum good for the most people in L.A. and the nation." She has an unblemished record as a strong advocate for progressive politics at the state and national level. First serving in the California State Assembly for 14 years, she has been in Congress for the past 17 years. Waters has successfully authorized, and had signed into law in California, the first child abuse prevention legislation, the ...
